The Hofstra track and field team sent their largest team ever -- 42 athletes -- to compete at the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational on Saturday, April 20. 32 of these athletes focused solely on the 100-meter dash.
12 men ran the 100 for Hofstra led by sophomore Tosin Ibironke in 13.10 finishing 26th. Classmate Felix Smith-Halle was just 0.1 seconds later finishing next in a time of 13.20. Dante Perez finished 28th in 13.70 and teammates Steven Fiumefreddo, Marc Meltzer, and Alex Masai all fell in line behind in 29th, 30th, and 31st respectively. Paul Markovina, Sean Masterson, Mitch Holson, and Gavin also ran the 100 but did not place.
In the women’s 100, Hofstra had a huge representation with 20 runners in the race. Freshmen led the way for the Pride as Krista Agnostelli and Sabrina Bryan placed 29th and 32 respectively, in times of 14.52 and 14.83 with classmate Megan Fisher following shortly behind in 34th in 15.25. Danielle Carpentieri, Abby Briggs, Michela Rucli and Lily Stavisky all finished next for the Pride in back-to-back places taking 37th, 38th, 39th, and 40th respectively.
The Pride then took every place from 42nd to 50th as Maddie Appleton finished 42nd in 16.89, with Megan Boese and seven more teammates following behind.
However, the Pride competed in more than just the 100-meter dash as the 400-meter saw four finishers represent the Hofstra men. Tyler McPartland led in 23rd in 55.21 and senior Ryan Connell was 25th in 55.98. Freshman Andrew Giovinazzo finished in 58.46 putting him in 27th, and sophomore Mitch Holson crossed the line in 28th in a time of 58.52.
In the 800-meter run McPartland again led the way finishing 18th in 2:09.20 with Connell in 21st and Giovinazzo in 27th. For the women, sophomore Alyssa Suits led Hofstra in 23rd in a time of 2:53.71 with freshmen Grace Giannatsi and Caroline Czerwonka following behind in 24th and 25th respectively.
Freshman Konrad Rynkowski was Hofstra’s sole 1500 runner, finishing the race in 5:00.93 and placing 25th.
In the field events, freshman Alex Cianciolo finished 3rd in the triple jump with a distance of 9.27 meters (30’5’’), making her Hofstra’s top finisher for the day for both the men and women. Cianciolo also placed 20th in the long jump in a distance of 4.10m (13'5.5" feet).
For the men, Reggie Poulin placed 14th in the shot put and 15th in the discus competition in distances of 9.39 meters (30'9.75" feet) and 26.20 meters (85'11" feet) respectively. Danny Pires also competed in the triple jump placing ninth in 10.56 meters.
Hofstra track will be back on Sunday, April 28 as the Pride head to the Yale Springtime Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut. Junior Alex Masai will also race the 5K this week at the 2019 Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
